Chihuly Baskets

Chihuly Baskets

Seeing Northwest Indian baskets collapsing under their weight inspired Chihuly to create his groundbreaking Baskets series, translating the sagging woven fiber works into translucent glass, eternally arresting their surrender to gravity and staking out his aesthetic territory with those asymmetrical forms. The book features sepia-toned photographs of Indian baskets in Chihuly's personal collection, drawings, full-color working shots, and brief statements from the artist.

Dale Chihuly has often called Baskets the most innovative work he has done. Experimenting with the use of fire, gravity, and centrifugal force, Chihuly found new ways to create asymmetrical vessels with thin, undulating walls. He often groups them in sets, with several small pieces nested within larger, wide-mouthed forms.
