JoAnna Poehlmann—Pour le Bain (Homage to Ito Shinsue 1917)

Lifelong Milwaukee resident and one of Wisconsin’s artistic treasures, octogenarian JoAnna Poehlmann is known for her literate sense of humor and her masterful draftsmanship.

Her Homage Pour le Bain is a tongue-in-cheek salute to all of the great artists who have used bathers as their subjects. Her placement of a color reproduction salutes artist Ito Shinsue—whose Japanese woodcut is featured above—while below she has offered the viewer a bar of Orchidee soap which she has hand drawn.
