Winthrop Byers—Oval Bowl

Winthrop Byers began working with clay in 1975 after finding inspiration in the work of his wife, Sandra, and has been a full-time studio ceramicist ever since. His work can be characterized through simplicity of form and complexity of the glazes. He is primarily known for creating large-scale wheel-thrown platters and using rich copper red glazes.

Byers briefly studied pottery at Cornell University while obtaining a degree in labor economics, but is essentially self-taught. His work has been exhibited all of the country and he has participated in the Smithsonian Craft Show, exhibitions at the Racine Art Museum; Phipps Center for the Arts, Hudson, WI; Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show; South Dakota Art Museum; Wayne Center for the Arts; and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI. His work is included in many publications including The Best of Pottery: Volume 2, The Ceramic Design Book, 500 Bowls, Making Marks:  Discovering the Ceramic Surface, 500 Plates and Chargers, and Surface Design for Ceramics.

These works are intended for regular use. They are versatile for both gifting and collecting. The intricacies of Byers' bowls create a dining experience that you will not forget!
