Racine native Robert Burkert (1930–2019) gained a rich education in art early when he received a scholarship for printmaking classes at the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts. There, he studied under director and landscape painter, Sylvester Jerry, and artist, Cherry B. Jerry. Meanwhile, at Racine Washington Park High School, Burkert studied under well-known landscape and still-life painter, Helen Sawyer.
After graduating, Burkert taught for one year at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He then returned to Wisconsin to work as a professor at University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. He headed the school's Printmaking Department until his retirement in 1993.
