However, looking back from our fin-de-siècle perspective, it is evident that the history of modern design is far more varied and complex. In "Inversion and Transformation" we see how materials have been unexpectedly inverted. Contrary to the accepted notion that Modern design should be devoid of ornament, the richly decorated surfaces and textures of objects in "Is Ornament a Crime?" argue for the everlasting appeal of floral and geometric patterns. Bacerra was a student at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, and assumed the position of chairperson of the ceramics department at Chouinard. Bacerra occupied this position there from 1963 to 1971, at which point Chouinard was renamed the California Institute of the Arts, which in 1971, dropped ceramics from the school's curriculum, and Bacerra went to work full-time in his studio. Bacerra is credited with important technological innovation in advanced ceramics, most notably resulting in his development of oven-top ranged surfaces for the Induction Stove Corporation that featured the use of electromagnetic induction. Bacerra returned to teaching in 1983 until 1997, this time accepting an offer from the Otis Art Institute to be chairperson of the ceramics department.

Bacerra's artwork is recognizable by its vivid use of color and contrast, which are the result of a delicate and multi-staged process of overglazing. His decorative aesthetic draws from Asian sources—most notably Japanese Imari and Kutani pieces, Persian miniatures, and Chinese Tang ceramics. Capitalizing on the post-World War II interest in bright colors and abstract patterns, the Higginses produced mostly functional items sold through major retailers and worked with glass companies until they formally established their private studio in Illinois. Frances and Michael’s partnership—both personal and professional—seemed to fuel their creative energy, and they devoted their lives to creating a seemingly endless array of plates, bowls, dishes, vases, and more.

Racine Art Museum recently established an archive collection of 75 works created collaboratively and individually by the Higginses. For example, in addition to production glassware, there is a large, multi-faceted frieze of trees, buildings, and butterflies attributed to Frances and a “treasure chest” of glass, wood, and fiber assigned to Michael. This volume of work—a large portion of which debuts in this exhibition—offers a chance to look at modernist glass through the works themselves and through the lens of a creative partnership with nuanced gives and takes.

Higgins Glass Studio—initially established in the Higginses’ apartment—still exists in Riverside, Illinois. As per the wishes of the Higginses themselves, the studio is now owned and operated by Louise and Jonathan Wimmer, a mother and son who studied with the couple.

Even if glassware from the Higginses is familiar, their involvement with the twentieth-century conversations that changed studio glass is not as well-known. The study guide that accompanies this compelling exhibition offers the chance to illuminate dynamic aspects of their story—linking threads of many conversations including the landscape of modern craft, the role of function and form, the balance of creativity, innovation, and collaboration, and aspects of entrepreneurship, process and production, consumerism, and interior design.

Significantly, this is the first exhibition in RAM’s Collection Focus series to focus on artists primarily working with glass.

24 pages
Softbound
© 2024 Racine Art Museum

RAM MEMBER PRICE: $4.50

Now on sale! A new phenomenon, this reflects new attitudes: an understanding that art-making occurs in glass as suitable for inclusion in museum collections. In this lavishly illustrated volume, Martha Drexler Lynn takes the reader on a tour of glass sculpture in American museums. She covers 26 permanent collections across the U.S., including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Cleveland Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Racine Art Museum. Her survey of these museums reveals their lively interest in glass as an artistic medium, despite an earlier modernist bias. Sculpture, Glass, and American Museums will appeal to collectors, museums, critics, and art historians. I'm afraid I'm not going to get everything done." Now and Then is witness to all these ideas. In more than one hundred images and three essays, Poehlmann and her work are introduced to a larger audience. In her essay, Barbara Brown Lee introduces us to a keen, meticulous artist with a wry sense of humor that peeks through all her work. Then Barbara Manger describes Poehlmann's life and work, revealing the variety of techniques and concepts she has explored in her long, successful career. Whether working in a silverpoint, graphite, xerography, or with large, lithographic stones, Poehlmann uses her skill to explore the natural world and pay homage to the artists who have preceded her. In the book's final essay, John Shannon explores Poehlmann's work in relationship to historic artistic themes and modern art concepts. Most importantly, Now and Then beautifully presents the work. Kate Hawley's layout and Robb Quinn's photography let Poehlmann's art dominate the page. We see Poehlmann travel from intimate drawings and collage to her current travel troves and homages. Poehlmann's unique observations, disciplined craft, and humor (which she calls the "seventh sense"), show her to be a truly modern artist. Now and Then gives us a Drag is the ultimate form of queer expression and art, and with the success of RuPaul's Drag Race, it's now more widely known and popular than ever. Brandi Amara Skyy is the perfect guide to all kinds of drag under the rainbow umbrella. Brandi's inclusive appreciation of every form of drag enables them to explain the history, importance, and life-affirming qualities of drag for everyone. Starting with the question "What is drag?" Brandi explores where the term really comes from, and debunks the myths about it. The history of drag is covered next, including drag as subversion, as an art form, and in popular culture. Drag has evolved over the years and been adopted into the mainstream, including TV and films—but has it lost its edge, and where will it go next? Finally, a resources section covers drag terminology, how to become a drag artist, and what to read and watch to find out more about drag.
