Basketworks: Exhibition Catalogue
Highlighting a major gift of contemporary baskets by California collector Lloyd Cotsen to RAM, this 20-page catalogue features full-color images of some of the most outstanding pieces now in RAM's permanent collection. The exhibition Basketworks: Cotsen Contemporary American Basket Collection debuted nearly 70 works of the 151-piece gift, creating one of the largest concentrations—nearly 300 contemporary basket works—in any US art museum.
This collection guide includes an essay/interview with the late Mr. Cotsen who was no stranger to assembling large collections in-depth and presenting them to museums. This gift is of particular note because the vast majority of the artists it represents are American women. This is a direct reflection of Mr. Cotsen’s belief that American women artists are leaders in advancing fibers as an art medium. He believed these artists are engaged in groundbreaking work that expands how the public perceives the basketry medium as a forum for serious work.
