Early Chinese Textiles from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection

Early Chinese Textiles from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection was published by the Cotsen Occasional Press in 2015, and includes a 35-page essay by Zhao Feng, director of the China National Silk Museum and a foremost scholar of early Chinese textiles. The book features 60 of the earliest Chinese textiles from the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Collection, dating from the Warring States period (450–221 BCE) to the start of the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE). Housed in a cloth-covered clamshell box, the publication is comprised of 60 unbound, high-resolution images by award winning fine art photographer Bruce M. White. On the reverse of each image card is catalog data and an expert analysis of fiber, weave, and pattern, as well as carbon-14 dating and pattern reconstruction.

This publication is a melding of 21st century technology—in the form of high-resolution photography and four-color offset printing—and ancient weaving technology. Created with scholars in mind, the printed images of the 60 textiles featured can be examined under magnification for weave techniques, fiber manipulation, and design. This title was awarded the 2015 R.L. Shep Textile Book Award from the Textile Society of America.
