Kim Cridler—Glass and Metal Vessels

Kim Cridler was trained as a metalsmith, She explores the history of metalworking and caged glass in these sculptural pieces.  Inspired by a family heirloom—a Russian samovar—she began creating works using the familiar iconography of vases and urns. Cridler creates a grid-like map of an object with its ribs of welded steel and decorative ornamentation in the foot.  In this work, glass has been blown within the form to cage and capture the space within.

Glass Study #7 classical in shape as the glass rises above the rim of the steel. The glass is light turquoise and is attached to the steel.  The foot is circular and ribbed and the stem is slightly flared at the top where it attaches to the base of the bowl.

Glass Study #9  is a classical vase shape and the glass extends above the rim of the steel. The bowl is elongated and tapered to a small decorative caged foot on six points. The glass is light turquoise and is attached to the steel.
