Mary Bero - Living Memories, 2013-14
Wisconsin artist Mary Bero's decorative fiber works or miniature tapestries combine embroidery techniques with painting, drawing to create an explosion of vibrant color, intimacy, and emotion. In Still Lifes, the checkerboard grid of images emerges from fears and dreams. Her techniques include is hand-stitching cotton or silk thread or floss to a cloth backing, simultaneously building up areas of color and texture that form striking images and patterns. She sometimes augments these methods with acrylics, cloth, or paper.
Her work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions over a span of thirty-plus years and is found in collections around the U.S. as well as in Germany and the United Kingdom. Selected collections include Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, MN; Milwaukee Art Museum; and Racine Art Museum, WI.
