Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, caricaturist, and printmaker.
Born an aristocrat, but living in Montmartre, a bohemian Paris neighborhood, Toulouse-Lautrec became a fixture in brothels and clubs. His work captured prostitutes, dance halls, and their customers in a graphic style influenced by Japanese prints.
For the opening of the Moulin Rouge club, he created a series of advertisements. The first, a six-foot tall poster, Moulin Rouge depicts the famous cabaret dancer, Louise Weber, known as “La Goulue” (the Glutton), kicking up her skirts in a cancan.
